What Is Trauma Therapy?

Trauma therapy is a specialized form of psychological care designed to help individuals process and recover from distressing or overwhelming experiences. Whether stemming from childhood adversity, abuse, violence, loss, or other life-altering events, trauma can leave a lasting impact on mental, emotional, and physical health.

Trauma therapy provides a safe space to address and integrate these experiences using evidence-based techniques and a compassionate, client-centered approach. The goal is to help individuals regain control, build resilience, and restore a sense of safety and well-being in their lives.

Our Trauma Therapy Approach

At Clinic UNI, our approach to trauma therapy is tailored to meet the unique needs of each client, drawing from a range of evidence-based, trauma-informed practices.

At Clinic UNI, the therapy journey begins with a comprehensive initial consultation and assessment. During this first step, we take time to understand your background, current concerns, and personal goals. This allows us to identify the most effective, tailored approach for your healing process.

Our trauma therapy model follows four key phases, each designed to support your growth and recovery at your own pace:

  • 1. Safety and Stabilization
  • Before addressing traumatic memories, we focus on creating a safe, supportive therapeutic relationship. This phase helps establish a sense of trust, safety, and personal agency.

  • 2. Resource Mobilization and Strengthening
  • Together, we identify and enhance your internal and external to help you feel more empowered and prepared for deeper therapeutic work.

  • 3. Trauma Processing and Integration
  • When you feel ready, we gently begin exploring and processing traumatic experiences using evidence-based therapeutic techniques, including:

  • • Prolonged Exposure (PE): Gradual exposure to trauma-related thoughts, memories, or situations to reduce fear and avoidance.
  • • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): Helps reshape negative beliefs related to trauma and encourages emotional healing.
  • • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT): Especially effective to address harmful thinking and behavior patterns.
  • • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Uses bilateral stimulation (e.g., guided eye movements) to help reprocess and release traumatic memories.

  • Throughout this phase, individuals begin to make sense of their experiences, rebuild their identity, and restore a sense of connection to their values, relationships, and life goals.

  • 4. Reorientation
  • The final phase involves reestablishing a forward-looking perspective. Clients consolidate their growth, embrace newfound strengths, and focus on living with greater clarity, purpose, and self-compassion.
